The sixth QMS release was the also the first to be recorded without the extraordinary guitar of John Cipollina. Nicky Hopkins joined the group in 1969 - replacing Gary Duncan - but by 1970 founding member Dino Valente was out of prison after serving a two year sentence for possession of marijuana, and the cat was back among the pigeons.
John Cippolina left soon after, unable to reconcile with Valente and the folkier direction the group was moving in, and for most fans of QMS's spidery mushrooming explorations the story ends there.
Except, this is a fine album, seriously worthy of reinvestigation if you've only paid it cursory attention in the past. The first side doesn't really work for me, with the notable exception of "Rebel", but side 2 more than makes up for the shaky start, with "Out Of My Mind" recalling Arthur Lee and Ray Davies, curiously, with its fragility. Reissued on CD in 1994 you could do far worse than seek it out.
